Education Initiatives

Education programs offered by BBEDC attracted an increasing number of participants from throughout the region. It was particularly gratifying to see more residents from smaller communities take advantage of the college development program to take distance delivered courses. Below are sketches of the individual programs.

Education Program Director Pearl Strub.

Harvey Samuelsen Scholarship

HSST offers financial aid to full-time, post-secondary students who are residents of Bristol Bay's 17 CDQ villages.  Scholarship recipients are pursuing Associates, Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate Degrees in both the United States and Canada.  Six recipients graduated in May 2006; others were on schedule to graduate in May 2007. Seventy BBEDC residents received $3,400 each to attend college on a full-time basis for the 2006-2007 academic year.

College Development Fund

The College Development Fund enables students to earn their college degree while staying at home in their community.  The participation for this program is also markedly increasing.  In 2006, fifty residents were awarded a maximum of $1,000 per semester in scholarships totaling $47,000 for tuition, books and travel.

The program also enables high school students in need of financial assistance to enroll in college level courses that are being offered for dual credit.

Salmon Camp

Salmon Camp is an exciting opportunity for students in grades six through eleven to learn salmon biology and science working with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and University of Alaska Bristol Bay Campus personnel. The casmp takes place at Lake Aleknagik in late July. Contact Kyle Belleque for more information.

Student Loan Forgiveness

This program provides financial incentives for college graduates to come back and work in the region.  An applicant must have been a resident of a BBEDC community prior to earning their degree and work in a BBEDC community for 12 months to be eligible for help with student loan debt. Annual payments are made overa five year period and can total $20,000. In 2006, five residents received $7,100 in student loan forgiveness.
