Training Programs

Basic Vocational,
Advanced Vocational-Technical
& Adult Basic Education

The Basic Vocational Training Program helps fund BBEDC classes, workshops, and local career/job fairs that are offered primarily through the Bristol Bay Campus and Southwest Alaska Vocational Education Center (SAVEC).  In doing this there is little or no cost to the residents, making what is often times a very expensive class affordable. Organizations wishing assistance with the funding of a class should contact Todd Fritze for information and an application.

The Advanced Vocational/Technical (Voc-Tech) Training Program sponsors individuals who are seeking new careers in a vocational field in fishing and non-fishing related fields. Applicants must be receiving a diploma, certification or Licenses to be eligible. Qualified applicants are eligible to receive up to $5,000 for all programs.  Funding for both short term and long term programs is available. For more information, contact Charlene Lopez or Todd Fritze.

To promote Adult Basic Education for both CDQ and non-CDQ residents, BBEDC provides financial support to the Bristol Bay Campus' ABE program and to the University of Alaska Fairbanks' GED program. Several hundred area residents have participated, and many have earned GED diplomas as a direct result of this funding.

Interns
Summer intern Anna Chuckwak

This program is new for 2008. The intent is to provide temporary seasonal employment opportunities to residents of BBEDC communities. BBEDC will work cooperatively with organizations to create entry level seasonal positions for residents. Funding is limited so it is important for organizations to inquire early.

Internships

By definition an internship is a work learning experience. BBEDC is working to develop internships within the region that will give residents a true work learning experience that will allow them to experience what is involved in working in a specific career. Internships are entry level and last approximately 12 weeks. Normally they involve fisheries-related work, such as, working with ADF&G or the USF&W in Biological positions. BBEDC interns are paid entry level wages and learn first hand what it’s like to be a member of the workforce. Have an idea for an internship or interested in applying? Contact Charlene Lopez or Todd Fritze.

Seattle-based internships typically last six months and offer on-the-job experience in a wide variety of occupations, from clerical, accounting, and human resources to information systems and marketing. Working with our industry partners, BBEDC pays for travel, lodging, utilities and wages.  Participants must submit detailed monthly reports documenting their work experience.

Youth internships promote basic job skills and training. Primary objectives include learning how to properly fill out applications, developing interview skills, and learning the importance of good work ethics. Youth internships generally last 10 ten weeks, take place in the summer, and provide a wide variety of occupational experiences.
